Production of the Lotus Eleven began in 1956 and ran to 1958 with approximately 270 of this impressive race model produced. Colin Chapman of Lotus originally designed the Eleven with the track in mind, with the first aspirations for the car to race in the 1100 cc classes. Here the car was impressive and highly successful with many wins to its name.
Frank Costin, an aerodynamics specialist, worked closely with Chapman during the development of the Lotus. The sleek elegant body of this Lotus demonstrated all of the current innovations in aerodynamics, so much so that a modified version of the standard Eleven, the Le Mans, broke a world record on he Monza track at the hands of the legendary Sterling Moss. Costin designed a bubble canopy for the Le Mans to reduce the drag further, allowing Moss to reach the mind blowing 143 mph the Le Mans Eleven took many titles during its time on the track and was successful around the world.
Power came from a range of different powerplants. Lotus originally used a 1.5 litre Coventry Climax engine in the Eleven, with other versions running with a 1.1 litre Climax or a 1172 cc Ford engine. Like all Lotus sports cars to come, weight was a key design element and the Eleven weighed in at only 450 kg. Lotus produced a second series of the Eleven over a short period of time during 1958 that featured a new drive chain and improved suspension.
