Lotus Six Waterproof Half Covers
Famously known as the first ‘production’ car from Lotus, the Mark Six comprised of a fully stressed space frame making it ideal for racing on both tracks and roads. The Six was originally available as a kit allowing the customer to construct their own car. This was also so that the customer could choose their own engine and gearbox to power their own unique Lotus Six. Lotus sold the Six between 1952 and 1957.
Like all Lotus sports cars the Six was a remarkably lightweight model at only 25kg. Colin Chapman, the head of Lotus at the time, used the Six to demonstrate several technological advancements for the time, most notably advanced suspension the body was constructed from lightweight aluminium and many of the components were sourced cheaply from the Ford Prefect.
The Lotus Six became a success on the British racetracks, often beating more expensive and powerful cars. This was due to the simple design and very lightweight design; a philosophy that Lotus have stuck to even today. The popularity with customers was due to the kit that was released to the general public. The kit for the Lotus Six came with many of the necessary specialist components rather than just the chassis, which was standard at that time. The chassis could also accommodate a range of different engines thanks to the inclusion of several different mounting points.
