The Mark Six was the first production car to ever be produced by Lotus Engineering, now known as Lotus Cars. The Six was sold between 1952 and 1957 and proved to be a success both as a commercial endeavour and on the track, winning several significant titles. As a retail car, Lotus sold the Mark Six as a kit car. Not only did this reduce price and tax on the vehicle but it allowed customers to choose their own engine and gearbox configuration.
By weighing only 25 kg the Mark Six set the tradition of lightweight and agile sports cars that has followed Lotus throughout their life, with even the most modern of cars still adhering to this philosophy. The car was also used as a test bed for a range of technological advancements by Colin Chapman, then head of Lotus. Lightweight aluminium was used for the chassis to keep weight to a minimum and an advanced suspension system was used. Lotus also managed to keep production costs low with many components being shared with the Ford Prefect.
On the racetrack the Mark Six could not be beaten, with many more expensive and highly engineers cars unable to match its performance. The simple design of the Six was the key to the success, along with the now classic lightweight Lotus design. The demand for the Six was strong, with a large number of kits produced. The success of the kit for the Six was down to the approach. Lotus included a wide range of components in the kit, allowing a large cross-section of people to purchase and construct their own car without having to source specific components.
