As the first production car to find its way onto the road from the Lotus Engineering factory, the Mark Six model has been both a commercial and racing hit. Lotus head Colin Chapman designed the Six to be sold as a kit car, allowing customers to build the car to their own specifications. By giving the option to include your own engine and gearbox combinations the Six was a great success for Lotus.
The success on the track for the Lotus Six was very impressive. The car frequently outperformed the more expensive and more highly engineered competition from the bigger names in car production and racing. The main factor in this success is the simple and lightweight design of the car. This gave agile handling and quick acceleration compared to the heavier cars. The Six was also a success for Lotus how managed to keep production costs low by sharing several components with the Ford Prefect. Many new technologies were also included on the Six, such as an all new suspension system and an aluminium chassis that kept the weight of the final car very low at approximately 25 kg.
Lotus certainly designed the Six car kit with their customer in mind. The original kit came with a wide range of components rather than just the chassis, meaning that many more people could construct their own cars without having to find difficult to source components. The chassis of the Lotus Six also included a wide range of engine mounting points, meaning that many different engines could be fitted.
