The Lotus Seven is a famous sports car produced by Lotus Engineering, now Lotus Cars, between 1957 and 1972. The Seven is a lightweight, simple sports car with two seats and an open top, and was one of the first cars to be both road legal and a vehicle that could be used for clubman racing. The Seven is seen as the start of the well known Lotus philosophy of designing simple performance cars that are extremely lightweight.
The Seven was extremely popular with over 2500 cars first sold. As Lotus ceased production the rights to the design were sold to Caterham Cars who still produce fully assembled cars and also sell kits to enthusiasts looking to build their very own Seven. Powered by a Ford Side-valve 1172 cc engine the Seven was the favourite for lower budget race teams, although car fans around the world sought these vehicles from the moment they were produced by Lotus.
Produced in Series 1 – 4, the car progressively developed into the Lotus innovations that we now recognise. Fibreglass replaced the aluminium bodywork. The Series 4 was not widely welcomed however as the popularity of its predecessors was still strong and the company stopped production in 1972. Caterham cars have gone on to supply both kit versions of the orignal models and have developed their own Caterham Seven which is an evolved version of the Series 3 by Lotus.
