lotus71.jpgFollowing the success both on the track and with the general public of the Lotus Six, the Seven was developed. Sold between 1957 and 1972 there were many series of the car (four in total) that saw several design changes as the car evolved. When Lotus ceased production of the Seven the rights were sold to Caterham who still produce a variant of the car known as the Caterham Seven.

The Seven was extremely popular following its release as it was one of the first cars to be both road legal and a car that could be raced in clubman racing. The simple design with the classic 2 seats and an open top made for a very attractive sports car. The Seven embodied the developing Lotus philosophy of a lightweight car that had agile and sporty handling. The first Sevens were powered by a Ford Side Valve 1172 cc engine, giving superb performance when coupled with the simple engineering from Lotus.

The first production of this highly popular Lotus car ran to over 2500 cars. Due to its popularity the car still had many followers as production came to an end. Lotus sold the rights to Caterham in 1972 who still produce both fully assembled and kit versions of the car. Caterham went on to develop their own version of the Lotus Seven Series 3, which is now sold as the Caterham Seven.
