lotus71.jpgThe success of the Lotus Seven is clear for everyone to see. Since Lotus first began production of the Seven in 1957 many have been sold around the world. This lightweight and agile early sports car embodies traditional motor car racing for many people and will remain a favourite for years to come. The success of the Lotus Seven is well demonstrated by the fact that is still sold today by Caterham who bought the rights to the car when Lotus ceased production in 1972. The Caterham Seven is still going strong and is sold in a variety of configurations in both fully assembled or kit form.

The Seven was an instant hit for Lotus as it was one of the first sports cars that was both road legal and qualified to be used for clubman racing. The popular and attractive car had two seats and an open top, keeping the car lightweight. It is the superb weight configuration of the Lotus and all cars to follow from Lotus that has allowed such success both on the road and track, giving superb performance and excellent handling. the incorporation of a Ford Side Vale 1172 cc engine completed the near perfect driving configuration.

By 1972 the production of the Seven drew to a close. Over the years Lotus had released 4 series of the Seven, each with slight modifications resulting in the inclusion of a fibreglass body and more agile suspension. The most successful and celebrated was the Series 3, which became the basis for the Caterham Seven when the rights were sold to Caterham.
