One of the latest cars to be produced by Lotus, the Exige is a coupe version of the famous Lotus Elise. The Exige boasted a 1.8 litre Rover K-series engine that offered up to 192 bhp when tuned for track conditions. Lotus launched a second version in 2004 that had the improved 16-valve Toyota/Yamaha DOHC engine. Lotus modified the design of the Exige slightly to improve performance. This included adding a front splitter, rear engine cover, a rear spoiler and a fibreglass hard top with roof scoop to improve the aerodynamics of the car. This gave the Exige nearly 40 kg more downforce at 100 mph than the same generation of Lotus Elise.
The limited edition was released in 2005. This Lotus vehicle had a Toyota engine complete with supercharger than produced a remarkable 243 bhp. Only 50 of this model were produced and were only available in black or yellow. The improvements made to the Exige in this limited edition increased the top speed to 150 miles per hour with an acceleration of 3.9 seconds to reach 60 mph.
Lotus are continuing to develop the model, with current models such as the Exige S 240. This latest model was released in 2008 and featured a larger roof scoop for added downforce, improved acceleration and an engine with 240 brake horse power. Future developments will include the Exige S which will be released in the United States and is a continuation of the earlier model.
