The Lotus Exige is a somewhat natural evolution of the famous Elise the Exige is simply a coupe version of the favourite, offering similar superb performance and exquisite styling.  It was first produced in 2000 with an impressive 1.8 litre Rover K-Series engine offering 192 brake horse power when performing in track conditions. Lotus upgraded the Exige in 2004 with a Toyota Yamaha joint 16 valve DOHC engine. This produced 190 bhp under normal road tuning.

Several improvements to the aerodynamics were made to the car to increase downforce. These included a front splitter, a fibreglass hard roof with a roof scoop and a rear engine cover. The improvements to the downforce from such minor improvements gave an increase in downforce of nearly 40 kg at 100 mph for the Lotus Exige compared to the equivalent Lotus Elise.

The limited edition Lotus Exige released in 2005 featured a Toyota engine with a supercharger to boost the power to 243 brake horse power. Only 50 of the limited edition were released, and were only available in black or yellow. Lotus proudly announced a top speed of the limited edition of 155 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in only 3.9 seconds. The latest is the Lotus Exige S 240, featuring a larger roof scoop, greater acceleration and an engine with 240 bhp. Released in 2008, the S 240 will be followed by the Exige S which is designed for the US market.
