Built from 1966 to 1975 the Lotus Europa was the first mass produced mid-engine road car. The 2 door GT coupe was again produced in 2006 as the Europa S with a design similar to that of the Lotus Elise. As with all Lotus sports cars the body was formed from fibreglass, keeping weight to a minimum. Combined with the steel chassis the fibreglass body formed a strong and reliable car that was based on a prototype built to compete for a Ford contract to build a Le Mans race car in the 1960’s; a fact easily seen in the F1 car styling of the Lotus Europa.
The Series 1 Europa was first sold in early 1967 with only 296 produced. Also referred to as the Type 46, they were originally sold with a Renault 16 1.4 litre engine and a four speed gearbox. With a weight of only 610 kg and a top speed of 110mph the car was exception for its time. To follow this, the S1s was produced with slight variations. During the production of the S1, the Team Lotus raced the ‘Type 47’ which was a modified Europa with a 5 speed gear box and 1594 cc engine. Only 57 of this car was produced meaning it is highly sought after.
The Series 2, known as the Type 54, entered the world in 1968 with several changes to the S1. The bodywork was now to be bolted on to the chassis rather than glued and a range of more luxurious elements were included such as electric windows, new interior and fully adjustable seats. In 1971 Lotus followed with the Europa Twin Cam (Type 74) with a 1558 cc Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine and a new Renault four speed gear box. The bodywork was redesigned in improve rear visibility following discussions with customers. The latest Europa from Lotus was introduced in 2006. The GT car is known as the Europa S with a 2.0 litre turbo boasting 197 bhp and 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds.
