Following its introduction in 1966, the Lotus Europa became the first production car to have a middle mounted engine. The Series 1 Europa was first sold in 1967 and only 296 were produced. The car was powered by a Renault 16 1.4 litre engine with a 4 speed manual gearbox. The Europe, also known as the Type 46, followed what is now the classic Lotus design of a hand-finished fibreglass body. The chassis was also constructed from steel to provide a strong and durable car. The Europa was originally based on a prototype designed to complete for a Ford contract to build a Le Mans race car in the 1960s, a fact that resulted in the distinctive F1 styling of the Lotus Europa.
The Formula 1 design and lightweight materials produced an exceptional car with fantastic abilities. The top speed of the Series 1 Europa was an impressive 110 mph, mainly thanks to such a little weight of 610 kg. The successful performance of the Europa led to the development of a racing version of the car, known as the Type 47. The Type 47 featured a 5 speed gearbox and a 1594 cc engine. This is a very popular Europa as only 57 were produced.
The second series of the Europa, the Series 2 or Type 54, was first produced in 1968. Developed from the Series 1, several changes were introduced. The most notably was the introduction of bolting the fibreglass body to the chassis rather than gluing so that it could easily be removed for repairs. Several high end features were also included such as electric windows, redesigned interior and fully adjustable seats. The Twin Cam was released by Lotus in 1971 with a 1558 cc twin cam engine developed jointly between Lotus and Ford. Further improvements included increasing the rear visibility and a new four speed gearbox from Renault.
