As with many sports cars from Lotus, the Europa has been developed and evolved over decades, producing a range of stunning performance sports cars. From the first Europa in 1966 to the current gracing the roads today, the Europa has been an impressive 2 door GT coupe for many years. The first Europa, the Series 1, was released by Lotus in 1967. Lotus originally called this the Type 46 and manufactured on 296. The first design of the Europa was based on a prototype intended to compete for a contract with Ford to develop a Le Mans race car for the 1960s. This was easily seen due to the distinctive styling of the Europa with F1 shapes and lines.

The Type 46 Lotus was powered by a Renault 16 1.4 litre engine, coupled with a four speed gearbox. The steel chassis of the Europa with handcrafted fibreglass body again meant that the car was agile and very lightweight at only 610 kg. The lack of weight helped the car to reach an exceptional  top sped of 110 mph. The performance of the Europa led to the development of the Type 47 that was used for racing, with very few changes. The addition of a five speed gear box and a 1.6 litre engine gave the Lotus an edge on the track. Demand for this car is very high as only 57 were ever produced.

The Series 2, or the Type 54, was first seen in 1968. Changes such as having the bodywork bolted on to the chassis rather than glued on to aid maintenance along with internal luxuries made the Lotus an even more desirable car. Many more developments followed, including the Lotus Europa Twin Cam in 1971 that was powered by a 1558 cc Lotus Ford Twin Cam engine. Changes to the bodywork also improved rear visibility. The latest Lotus Europa to be developed was in 2006. This car is styled very much in keeping with the highly successful Lotus Elise, producing a truly stunning and elegant car. The Lotus Europa S comes complete with a 2.0 litre turbo that offers a respectable 197 bhp and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in just 5.6 seconds.
