lotusesprit1.jpgThe Lotus Esprit was first seen on the roads in 1976 following it’s unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in 1975. The car was designed to replace the Lotus Europa, and as a progression from this car the Esprit’s chassis is a longer and more stretched version of the one used for the Lotus Europa. The first generation of the Esprit became known as the S1. Powered by a Lotus 907 engine, the car continued Lotus tradition of a fibreglass body. As always the car was remarkably lightweight and owed this to its exceptional performance. When coupled with the transaxle 5 speed gearbox and inboard rear brakes a superb sports car was produced. The S1 Esprit is known best for being the car that James Bond turned into a submarine in the 1977 classic ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’.

Following the original Esprit, Lotus developed the Series 2 (S2) that improved power and changed the intake and cooling ducts that are located behind the rear quarter window. A special edition of the S2 was produced to commemorate the success of Lotus in recent racing events. Approximately 149 of the John Player Special Esprit were rolled off the production line in the teams F1 colours of black and gold. An additional 2.2 litre engine version was also sold in 1980 and with only 88 of these produced they are extremely sought after by Lotus collectors.

Since then, many other models have been produced. The 1980 Lotus Essex Esprit boasted a top speed of over 150 mph and 210 bhp and was released in the current F1 colours of red, blue and chrome in reflection of Essex Petroleum, one of the sponsors. Only 45 were produced in these colours, with more released in non-sponsor designs. The Turbo Esprit followed in 1981 along with the S3.

The latest Lotus Esprit to be produced is the V8 in 1996. With a 3.5 litre twin turbo engine it is the most powerful yet, offering 355 bhp. Different versions were developed, including the GT3 and SE, which had different internal configuration but with similar performance. The Lotus Esprit was produced until 2004, with 10675 produced in total. There are plans in the future for more Lotus Esprit but little details are known.
