lotusesprit1.jpgFirst seen at the Paris Motor Show in 1975, the Lotus Esprit was launched for sale in early 1976. The esprit was an evolution of the classic Lotus Europa, from which many design ideas came from. The most important was to use a similar design to the chassis but make it longer and more stretched. The Series 1 (S1) was powered by a Lotus 907 engine that had first been developed for the Elite. The body of the Esprit was constructed from fibreglass following tradition from the Lotus team. As always, this added to the lightweight design of the Esprit.

The first Lotus Esprit is famously known as one of James Bonds most popular cars. A white Esprit was used to develop the ‘submarine’ car from ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ in the 1977 classic. Following the success for the Series 1 Esprit, Lotus released the Series 2. This car had improved performance and more power, along with a change to the intake and cooling ducts to the rear of the car. To celebrate the success of Team Lotus in racing events a special edition model of the Esprit Series 2 was released. Only 149 of this unique car were produced. To reflect the team that this edition was celebrating the limited edition esprit came in racing colours of black and gold in respect of the F1 team. An additional 88 were produced with an improved 2.2 litre engine and due to their rarity, these are highly sought after y collectors.

1980 saw the release of the Essex Esprit in dedication to Essex Petroleum. The car was designed in the F1 colours of the team; red, blue and chrome. The Essex Esprit performed impressively, with a top speed of 150 mph and an impressive 210 bhp. Only 45 were sold in the limited edition colours, although many more were produced in standard Lotus colours. The latest Lotus Esprit was produced in 1996, powered by a V8 3.5 litre twin turbo engine offering 355 bhp. More than 10,000 were sold until production was ceased in 2004.
