1976 saw the introduction of the Lotus Esprit following an impressive launch at the Paris Motor Show in the previous year. Originally designed as a replacement for the Europa, the Esprit continued the styling of the Europa into a longer vehicle with a much increased wheelbase. The first generation of Esprit was powered by a Lotus 907 engine following its development in the Lotus Eclat. Traditional Lotus design was not ignored with the Esprit. The body is again crafted from lightweight fibreglass to reduce weight on the car at all possible points.

The Series 1 Lotus Esprit is also well known in the movie business. The most famous outing for the Lotus Esprit is in the classic James Bond ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ in 1977. A white Lotus Esprit was used as the amphibious sports car what changed into a submarine-like vehicle. The sleek design of the Esprit made it the perfect car for this role.

The Series 2 saw improved power and a change in the intake and cooling ducts to the rear of the car. Several special editions have also been released, most notably the John Player Special which commemorated the company’s performance in racing events. With only 149 produced in the limited edition colours of black and gold, the same as the F1 team, the car was a hit and in high demand from enthusiasts. Other editions included larger engines with a 2.2 litre version in 1980. The Lotus Essex Esprit followed in respect to sponsor Essex Petroleum. The colours of this edition were red, blue and chrome, with only 45 being produced. The high demand for this edition led to further production but these cars did not carry the sponsor colours.

The latest incarnation of the Lotus Esprit was released in 1996, powered by a more modern V8 engine boasting a 3.5 litre twin turbo that offered an impressive 355 bhp. Several versions were produced by Lotus, such as a GT and SE. These cars had similar performance but different internal designs. The last was built in 2004 by Lotus, totalling over 10600 produced. It is thought that the Esprit will return, although there are only rumours regarding the details as of yet.
