The name ‘Elite’ has been used for two of Lotus’ sports cars. The first Lotus Elite was produced in 1957 at the London Motor Car Show in Earls Court following a massive 14 years in development. Lotus had developed its distinctive fibreglass monocoque with the Elite. Revolutionary for its time, the car also featured fibreglass constructed internal support systems throughout the car, unlike all other sports cars of that time.
This internal design meant better driver protection in the result of a crash, along with lighter and stiffer body. The performance of the 1957 model was impressive for its day. A top speed of 111.8 was published, with acceleration from 0-60 mph in 11.4 seconds. With a fuel consumption of approximately 40 miles per gallon the popularity of this car can easily be seen.
The Lotus Elite reappeared in 1974 until 1982 under the names ‘Type 75’ and the 4 seat ‘Type 83 Elite II’. The Elite II was the first to have a front mounted engine with rear-wheel drive. Combined with independent suspension for each wheel, power steering and air conditioning, Lotus broke into the luxury sports car market with the Elite II. The car originally came with a five speed manual gearbox with the additional option of an automatic transmission from early 1976. This Lotus was the first to use the 907 aluminium-block 4 valve DOHC. This became the basis of the powerplant of the Lotus Esprit.
