Initially designed during a stunning 14 year development program the Lotus Elite is an excellent example of Lotus engineering and design. The first was released in 1957 and was the first to feature the distinctive Lotus fibreglass body. Subsequent cars have used fibreglass for its sheer strength despite its lightness which makes it the perfect material for a sports car. Several internal structural supports were also designed and manufactured from fibreglass, adding to the weight saving components of the design.
The performance of the Elite was well received in the motor industry, with many surprised by how well such a simple sports car could operate. With a top speed of 111.8 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 in 11.4 seconds the Elite was certainly a desirable sports car. The fuel consumption was also impressive, thanks to such a light bodyweight, running at approximately 40 miles to the gallon.
Lotus released a modern version of the Elite in 1974 and ran production until 1984. This new car was referred to as the Type 75, with a 4 seat version the Type 83, Elite II. Both types of the Elite II had a front mounted engine that powered a rear-wheel drive system. Luxuries were added to the Elite II such as air conditioning and power steering, developing the car into an even more desirable car.
