The Lotus Elise is arguably the most famous of the Lotus models. Developed from 1994 for release in 1996, the Elise is a popular roadster that can travel at up to 150 mph. The instantly recognisable name ‘Elise’ comes from Elisa, the granddaughter of Lotus chairman Romano Artioli in 1994.
The Elise has been released by Lotus in several series since 1994. The initial production models are Series 1. These sports cars had an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds which is massively impressive for a vehicle weighing just 725kg. For comparison, the Porsche Boxster comes in at 1250kg with similar performance. The significant weight difference of the Lotus Elise is thanks to its hand finished fibreglass body mounted on an aluminium chassis. The low weight of the car gives a fantastic performance, with exceptional braking, cornering and fuel consumption that makes this car a favourite for sports car fans looking for an affordable but high performing vehicle.
One model of Lotus Elise Series 1 was the 111S. Introduced in 1999 was powered by a VVC Rover K-series engine giving 143 brake horse power. The 111S also boasted a closer ratio gearbox, more comfortable seats and several aesthetic alterations including new wheel design and a new rear spoiler.
Series 2 of the Lotus Elise was announced in 2000, as an evolution of the Series 1 models. One significant difference was that the Series 2 were produced at the same plant as the Vauxhall VX220 and to keep production costs down some components were used in both vehicles. The Series 2 Lotus Elise was available as an 111S model that housed a VVC powerplant. An 111R version was developed for North America that offered 189 bhp and a 6 speed Toyota gearbox.
