The name Elise is known throughout the motor industry. The Lotus Elise is one of the flagship models for Lotus, and is very popular around the world. The name ‘Elise’ came from the much loved granddaughter, Elisa, of the Lotus chairman, Romano Artioli, in 1994. Since then, the name Elise  has indicated one of the most elegant roadsters developed by Lotus.

Since 1994 the Elise has been released in several series. The Series 1 was launched as a comparable car to the Porsche Boxster. The Elise had an acceleration from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds; a superb feat for such a lightweight care. Like all Lotus cars, the Elise was designed with weight in mind. At only 725 kg the Lotus is lighter than the Porsche Boxster by an impressive 500 kg yet performs just as well. This stunning weight is down to the use of a hand finished fibreglass body mounted on a lightweight aluminium chassis. The car boasts fantastic fuel consumption, agile handling and efficient braking, making this Lotus a highly sought after car.

Other models of the Elise include the 111S that was released in 1999 with a VVC Rover K-Series engine. With a closer ration gearbox and an engine giving 143 bhp the 111S was a better performing car that also featured several cosmetic changes such as a new wheel design and a new rear spoiler. By 2000 the Series 2 was released, with several differences from the original Elise. Lotus had moved assembly to the same plant as the Vauxhall VX220, allowing both cars to share some components to cut costs. Again, an 111S version was produced with a Rover engine, followed by the 111R that was developed for sales in North America.
