The Lotus Elan refers to two different generation of sports cars. In the 1960s the first was produced. The original Lotus Elan was born as a roadster with 2 seats. This sporty car led many innovations for Lotus, the most significant being the use of a steel chassis to provide a strong structural support with a modern fibreglass body. In addition to this an engine was developed for the Elan that was alter used by Team Lotus for a range of racing cars and other production models.
With a weight of only 680 kg the Lotus Elan was built following the now famous Lotus philosophy of designing lightweight cars that perform magnificently and handle like a high class sports car. The first Elan was soon developed to include an optional hard top followed by a coupe version in 1965.
The Elan +2 was developed for production in 1967. This version of the Elan compromised of a longer wheelbase than increased the size of the vehicle to such a degree that two additional seats could be included in the rear of the car. The styling of the car was changed very little and this elegant and now more practical sports car proved to be a success. The Lotus ceased production of the Elan in 1975 and was a massive commercial success for Lotus.
Lotus reissued the Elan in the 1990s with a completed redesigned sports car. It was again a two door roadster but this time was powered by a front wheel drive system. The car was unfortunately not a commercial success like its predecessor with only 300 ever made. Despite its improved handling and ride compared to the older model several drawbacks were found in certain conditions which led to some unfavourable reviews.
