lotuseclat1.jpgThe Lotus Eclat was produced between 1974 and 1982. The car was a front engine rear wheel drive two door coupe. The Lotus Eclat was developed from the Elite but to improve storage space to the rear of the car Lotus redesigned it to have a fastback body to increase the size of the back of the car. The fastback style of the Eclat is characterised by a continuously sloping roofline that runs down through the back of the vehicle. Not only did this design provide valuable space to the rear of sports, cars such as the Lotus Eclat, that traditionally have smaller boot space but also improved aerodynamic performance. This style produces a lower drag coefficient, increasing the aerodynamics of the car.

The Eclat Series 1 cars were powered by a 1973 cc Lotus 907 Slant Four engine. This produced an impressive 160 bhp for the Eclat. This engine was originally developed by Vauxhall in 1966 and was one of the first production overhead camshaft designs that featured a rubber toothed belt to drive the camshaft from the crankshaft. The differences between the Lotus engine, such as the one used in the Eclat, and the Vauxhall engine included the use of different metal alloys to improve the weight of the engine. Lotus went on to improve the weight in their design of the engine to use more aluminium than Vauxhall in the development of their 16-valve head for the Team Lotus rally cars.

Later cars, known as the Series 2 Eclat featured a 2.2l version of the 907 engine series known as the Lotus 912. Both models also featured a five speed manual gearbox with an option of an automatic transmission. The engine used in the Eclat became known for its performance and reliability and was later used in the Esprit.
