Lotus began production of the Eclat in 1974, with many produced up until 1982. The original concept for the Eclat came from the famous Lotus Elite, but the designers wanted to develop a car that was more spacious and had improved storage to meet the growing needs of their loyal customers. Improved performance was also demanded, and with the Eclat they did jsut this.
The major ‘redesign’ from the Elite came from the inclusion of a fastback design. This feature had the roofline continuing along the rear of the car, running all the way to the bumper. This allowed for the incorporation of a much larger rear area of the car with a much more economical use of space. The fastback design also had many advantages in terms of aerodynamics, as it reduced the drag created by a chunkier design and produced excellent aerodynamics. In addition, the design was sleek and stylish, adding to the appeal of the Eclat.
Two series of the Eclat, Series 1 and Series 2, were released by Lotus. The Series 1 Eclat contained a Lotus 907 Slant Four engine. This engine was originally developed by Vauxhall in 1966 and featured cutting edge design. Lotus evolved this design to include lightweight components to reduce weight. The engine in the Eclat was a 1973 cc which when combined with the traditional Lotus lightweight design produced a superb sports car. The engine was such a success that Lotus developed a 16 valve version for use in the Team Lotus rally cars.
Towards the end of the production life of the Eclat, Lotus released the Series 2 Eclat. This featured a more powerful 2.2 litre 912 engine, which was the next generation following the development of the 907 engine. This engine proved a success and was used in later cars, including the Esprit.
