In 1953 Ford introduced an advanced and more upmarket of the Zephyr under the name of the Ford Zodiac. This car built on the beauty and design of the Zephyr to deliver not only a styling car but one that provided superb acceleration, excellent fuel consumption and an impressive top speed. The Mark I version of the Zodiac came with a 2.2 litre Straight-6 engine that gave over 70 brake horse power and a top speed of just over 80 mph. When tested by The Motor magazine, the well known British automotive media, the Ford Zodiac gave an acceleration from 0-60 mph of 20.2 seconds, impressing all those involved. The Ford Zodiac came with two-tone paint, whitewall tyres and beautiful tail stylings, making it quite distinguishable from the Zephyr of the time.
Ford used the Zodiac to try new technologies that improved the basic performance of the Zephyr. The inclusion of the MacPherson strut suspension provided a smoother ride and improved handling for the driver. 1956 saw the release of the second generation of the Ford Zodiac, the Mark II. New additions such as more detailed tail-ends and a new grille for the front of the car made the Ford Zodiac Mark II instantly recognisable. Traditions such as the two-tone paint and whitewall tyres were kept, ensuring that the Ford Zodiac lost none of its charm and simple beauty. The Zodiac Mark II featured several upgrades from the Mark I, including a higher top speed of 87.9 mph and a greater acceleration of 0-60 mph in 17.1 seconds.
In 1962 Ford launched the last version of the Zodiac, the Ford Zodiac Mark III. There were also a limited number of an Executive edition released which was available with an impressive range of added extras and luxurious options. The most well known feature of the Mark II was the inclusion of ‘limousine style’ rear doors, adding a touch of class to the car. The technological improvements meant that the car had again an increase in top speed and accelerations, thanks to the inclusion of a 2.5 litre engine. With a top speed of over 100 mph and a brake horse power of 109, the Zodiac Mark III was a popular car of the early 1960s.
