The Ford Taunus represents a large number of different vehicles that have been produced in pre and post war Germany and Europe for many years. The Ford Taunus name is taken from a range of German mountains and it holds the accolade of being one of the longest running Ford name badges in history with a Taunus of one form or another being in production from 1939 right through until 1982. Although the Ford Taunus takes some of its inspiration from the Eifel it also draws from the popular Anglia in that the Eifil engine is mated with a longer more aerodynamically sound body that means that the newer, larger vehicle can outperform the existing smaller model. The Ford Taunus was also a first for various technologies including hydraulic brakes.
Production of the Ford Taunus ceased in 1942 and was not started again until 1948 and the car went from strength to strength in the post war years. By 1952 Ford's strategy had changed and rather than the Ford Taunus being an individual vehicle the name had become an export label for all Fords that were sold in Germany. The Ford Taunus was a brand in its own right with a large selection of bodies, engines and trim levels available across the range of vehicles ensuring that no matter what type of vehicle the customer required there would be one in existence and it would be sold under the Ford Taunus name.
Increasing wealth in Germany in the post war years meant that people were increasingly able to afford more luxuries; gradually many more expensive and luxuriously appointed cars were introduced to the range. One of these new cars was a brand new Ford Taunus that very quickly became known as the "Ford Taunus Baroque" model. This is because it was a car packed full of hints of Americana complete with large sweeping tailfins and strakes along the body work of the vehicle. This car sold well amongst the middle classes until its retirement and Ford continued to introduce a new Taunus every so often. The most recent was the TC version, this adaptable car was based on the Cortina and was available as a two and foor dour sedan, coupe and a station wagon.
