The Ford Taunus was the name used for a tremendous variety of different vehicles throughout the years that were primarily sold in Germany, although some were released in other markets. The original Ford Taunus that was sold in Germany draws its name from the Taunus range of mountains, and it was by far one of the longest running vehicles in production by Ford with the name being used in one form or another from 1939 through to 1982. Whilst the Taunus was based on the Eifel car it also shared much in common with the Anglia, it utilised the engine from the former but the chassis, like the Anglia, was larger and slightly thinner and it was more aerodynamic offering slightly better performance off the same power plant. The Ford Taunus was one of the first in Germany to feature hydraulic brakes as well.
In 1942 Ford halted production in Germany and the Taunus was not sold again until 1948, and the post war years throughout the 1950's and 1960's saw the Ford Taunus being used as the name for every single car in Germany complete with a distinct and individual model number. Indeed the "Ford Taunus" badge had become something of an export brand rather than a single vehicle or class of vehicles, and this ensured that whether you were interested in economy or luxury there was a Taunus for you. Ford installed a small V4 unit in the more diminutive vehicles but the larger ones featured a bigger V6.
With increasing wealth per head of the population in Germany Ford began to release more and more expensive cars in order to appeal to a luxury market, and one of the main vehicles to capitalise on this was a brand new Ford Taunus that was based on the 1950's American Fords, complete with large tailfins and strakes flowing over the vehicles body work. This vehicle was quickly dubbed the "Ford Baroque Taunus" and was purchased in fairly large numbers by aspiring members of the middle classes who sought a small piece of Americana. One of the most recent versions of the Ford Taunus was the TC model that was available as a sedan, station wagon and coupe and based around the Cortina design.
