The Ford Squire is a delightful vintage car designed to be sold in the UK between 1955 and 1959. It was produced in the post-war boom period, something of a golden age for automotive engineering when new technologies and design ideas were commonplace. The Ford Squire was a popular estate vehicle with four seats, two doors, and was sibling to the Prefect 100E.
Like the Prefect 100E the Ford Squire was powered by a 1172 cc Sidevalve engine that could output 36 bhp, more than enough for a family oriented vehicle. The Squire, Prefect and Ford Anglia were all closely related, with the shorter body more closely relating to the Anglia but the interior trim and components being taken from the popular Prefect.
The Ford Squire featured a stunningly crafted delicate wood
trim in it's first years of existence, however it was not a major success for Ford as it was up
against stiff competition from the Hillman Husky and the Austin A30 and
A35. When the Ford Squire was tested a top speed of just under 70 mph
was recorded and it took 20.2 seconds from 0-50 mph. Fuel consumption
was something in the region of 35 miles per imperial gallon.
