 The Ford Sierra was a popular family car and company car from 1982 until it was discontinued in 1993, and although it does not have the assets of a sports car it has certainly earned a place in automotive history for changing the styling of the worlds vehicles in one fell swoop. In the Ford Sierra the company had created a car that helped change the shape (literally) of all cars to come, and although some criticised the radical design when it was first launched many soon imitated it and eventually all cars looked like the Ford Sierra! The vehicle replaced the popular Cortina and Taunus so it is obvious that it had some large shoes to fill, however it did this with gusto and has proved to be a timeless design.
The essence of what makes the Ford Sierra special is the unique "aero" styling that is based around aerodynamics rather than aesthetics. This design was first trialled on one of the "Probe" concept vehicles and underwent many revisions before it was finally released on a production vehicle, unfortunately it proved to be too radical for some with many people choosing not to purchase a Sierra and instead opt for more traditional Ford cars or cars from other companies. This dividing of opinion plagued the first few years of production for the Ford Sierra until other vehicles began to age.
Even though sales were never spectacular they were still strong; 2,700,500 Sierras were sold over the course of 11 years which is a success by any definition of the word. Sales increased over the years as other vehicles began to look very old and dated and the Ford Sierra remained timeless always looked stylish no matter what the trends or fashions were. The car proved very successful as a company car with many firms purchasing up huge orders of Ford Sierras in order to offer to employees to drive. Obviously with such an iconic design as the Sierra it only saw small revisions and updates throughout its life to correct minor problems. Just before its retirement the Ford Sierra still looked fresh and new, and it was surrounded by much younger vehicles all clad in their own interpretations of the "aero" aesthetic that divided opinion so much.
