The Ford Sierra has earned a special place in automotive history as starting a whole design trend as well as for being one of the most popular company cars and family cars on the roads throughout the 80's and early 90's. It may be a mistake to say that the Ford Sierra pioneered the concept of a family car; what it did do was reinvent how family cars are interpreted by people and make them much more popular. The Ford Sierra demonstrated that a large, comfortable vehicle with plenty of space in the back and four full size doors can still be fun to drive and own. The Ford Sierra was intended to replace the Cortina and Taunus that were discontinued just before the new vehicle was released in 1982.
One thing that immediately divided opinion about the Ford Sierra was its looks, many felt the new "aero" styling was far too dramatic and instead preferred to purchase more conservative and conventional looking vehicles. Perhaps due to this splitting of opinions the Ford Sierra never saw the runaway success of the Cortina, it did however sell 2,700,500 units in eleven years making it a success, if not a major one. The "aero" design of the Ford Sierra was the culmination of years of research beginning with the "Probe" concept vehicles. It proved to be a good investment because it paved the way for modern car design, eventually other manufacturers began adopting a similar style and throughout it's life the Ford Sierra never dated or looked old.
Although various bugs were fixed and small changes were made to the Ford Sierra over the years there was never a major redesign or face lift, it proved so good that any major changes would simply have ruined the cars performance and unique selling points. Despite the excellent capabilities of the Ford Sierra some media outlets took it upon themselves to try to tarnish the reputation of the car by citing handling dangers (that had already been fixed) and announcing such nonsense as the fact that Ford were going to re-introduce the Cortina as the Sierra was not selling well. Despite this negative press the vehicle went from strength to strength and is an iconic design on the worlds roads.
