The Ford RS200 represented a rare foray into the world of Group B rally racing by Ford Motorsport. The motorsports division wanted a follow up to their successful MkIII Escort that dominated in 1980, however the RS200 did not come immediately. The Ford RS200 was actually born of a project that failed, the Escort RS 1700T. This vehicle was plagued with development problems from the moment development commenced and it never really saw the light of day and the concept was cancelled in 1983 so the decision was taken to build a brand new Group B rally vehicle from scratch, and henceforth the Ford RS200 was created.
With the help of Ghia Ford created a very unique, high tech design with the RS200. The body was composed of a lightweight and durable blend of plastic and fibreglass and the mid mounted engine was connected to a complex drive train that connected to a transmission situated in the front of the vehicle in order to air weight distribution. The vehicle was fully four wheel drive and was actually built by Reliant on behalf of Ford. Upon its release many hailed the RS200 as something of a critical success that was well balanced and provided excellent sensation to the driver, however there were also many flaws that became apparent when the vehicle was raced.
Even though the Cosworth engine that powered the Ford RS200 was capable of 250 horsepower on the road version and up to 450 horsepower for the rally trim model there was noticeable low RPM lag resulting in poor acceleration off the mark. This may have not been a problem on the roads but it hampered the ability of the car to do well in rallying. The Ford RS200 was unluckily involved in a variety of tragic accidents and then the Group B category was cancelled in 1987 resulting in the vehicle having no real job to do. Ford produced a number of upgrade kits for the road legal version of the RS200 that boosted power, but it proved to have limited success. Whilst a small number of 1987 models did find homes in smaller racing championships the Ford RS200 was effectively dead and further development ceased.
