The cat-like Ford Puma was designed as a small 2+2 coupe sports car that would be sold in Europe and not marketed in the US or Austalia. When it was launched in 1997 it lived up to its design brief perfectly, it was small, light, comfortable, featured 3 doors and 2+2 seating, front engined and front wheel drive and best of all was exceptionally fun to drive. Both the right and left hand drive versions of the Ford Puma were built in Germany and then shipped across Europe. In order to cater to many different demographics Ford decided to release the Puma with a wide selection of engines offering varying combinations of economy and power. At one end of the scale we have the basic 90 horsepower 1.4 litre version, then the 103 horsepower 1.6 litre version, followed by the 123 horsepower 1.7 litre version. Ford also release a 153 horsepower 1.7 litre racing model.
Although the Ford Puma was originally based off the Fiesta there are actually very few similarities between the vehicles with the Puma featuring a new body, new suspension, a new engine, and a new interior design, and Ford also incorporated more electronic options such as ABS, traction control and variable camshaft timing. Throughout the vehicles life Ford unveiled a number of different special editions in order to keep demand high. All of these were limited editions and featured changes over the base model. The Ford Puma "racing edition" was supposed to run for 1000 vehicles but only 500 were ever sold, it featured a more powerful 155 horsepower engine along with various styling changes, disk brakes, bucket seats and new 17" wheel rims. The Ford Puma "millennium edition" ran for 1000 cars again but was simply a colour swap, being available in a brand new zinc yellow shade with a blue leather interior. One of the most striking Ford Puma editions was the "black" that featured black leather interior, black paint, and new alloys. There was also the Ford Puma "thunder" that ran for 2000 cars and featured two new paint options.
Many people associate the Ford Puma with rallying and this is because the company offered a kit car version of the Puma designed with racers and rally driving in mind. This version from Ford featured a much more powerful engine that could rev to 9,000rpm and output 200 horsepower, and a new 6 speed gearbox to help the car put the power down on the road. Sadly when the Ford Puma ceased production in 2002 it was not replaced by a new version with Ford instead concentrating on the StreetKa to fill the gap left by the Puma. To this day the vehicle remains a design classic and something of a unappreciated vehicle that received many excellent reviews and to all intents and purposes was an excellent vehicle to drive.
