Ford PumaThe lightweight sporty coupe that is the Ford Puma is a car that never made a major impact on the automotive industry yet it received excellent reviews and by all accounts was a very well built vehicle. The Ford Puma was designed just with Europe in mind so it was never marketed in the US, Japan, or Australia, and all versions of the Puma were based around the basic premise of a front engined front wheel drive 2+2 3 door coupe. In order to satisfy customer demand Ford released a number of different engine choices for the Puma ranging from the economical 1.4 90 bhp to the 1.6 103 bhp to the 1.7 123 bhp, and the range was finished with a modified 1.7 racing engine that could output 153 bhp. Although the Ford Puma is based on the Fiesta apart form sharing a very basic, elemental design the two vehicles have little in common with the Ford Puma featuring a new engine, new body, new suspension and new interior fixtures and fittings.

The Ford Puma featured many more performance and electronic driving airs than the Fiesta as well such as traction control and ABS, and they also included their own variable camshaft timing system. Throughout the vehicles life a number of special editions were launched in limited quantities. The first special edition was the "Racing" Ford Puma that was supposed to run for 1000 vehicles but only made 500 as it did not prove popular. It featured a boosted engine, new body kit, disk brakes and bucket seats along with new rims. The next edition to follow as the "Millennium" Ford Puma. This ran to 1000 vehicles and was basically an aesthetic change, with new yellow paint and dark blue leather upholstering inside. As the name may suggest the "Black" Ford Puma was a black painted, black leather clad alloy toting version of the vehicle that ran to 1600 units. Ford also produced a "Thunder" Ford Puma that ran to 2000 cars, half of them being painted in "Moondust Silver" and the other in "Magnum Grey".

The "Thunder" versions also featured a unique new grey leather interior, a 6 disc CD changer stereo and, of course, new alloy wheels. Perhaps the most unusual version of the Ford Puma was the kit car model designed for rallying. This featured a much more powerful and robust engine that could output 200 bhp and a new 6 speed gearbox. When the last Ford Puma rolled off the production line in 2002 it was never directly replaced by another vehicle, instead Ford introduced the StreetKa rather than develop a new Puma.
