Ford PumaThe Ford Puma is a small sporty coupe car that was produced between the years of 1997 and 2002. The Ford Puma was strictly a European vehicle and was never sold in the US or Australia. Although there were different versions of Ford Puma available throughout the vehicles life generally speaking they all featured a front mounted engine with front wheel drive, 2+2 seating and a 3 door arrangement. A number of different engines were available for the Ford Puma ranging from 1.4 litre 90 bhp, 1.6 103 bhp, and 1.7 123 bhp right up to the 1.7 racing version that featured 153 bhp. The basic premise of the Ford Puma takes many design cues from the Fiesta, however the body, suspension engine and interior are all heavily modified and the Ford Puma also featured more performance and stability options such as variable camshaft timing, a traction control system and ABS.

The small, sporty nature of the vehicle lends itself to varying editions, and as a result Ford released a number of special edition Puma vehicles between 1997 and 2002. The first of these was the Ford "racing" Puma, only 500 were ever made and it featured a variety of changes including a boosted engine that produced 155 bhp, a new body kit, disk brakes, bucket seats and 17" rims. The Ford "millennium edition" Puma was a limited run of 1000 vehicles and featured a brand new zinc yellow colour coupled with a blue leather interior. The Ford "black" Puma was limited to 1600 units and as the name might suggest featured a black leather interior, black paintwork and brand new alloys. The final special edition was the Ford "thunder" Puma, this was a run of 2000 vehicles, half being in moondust silver and the other half in magnum grey.

All of the thunder models featured a grey leather interior along with a new stereo and new alloy wheels. Ford also produced a kit car version of the Puma designed for home assembly for use in rallying. The kit car version was the most powerful featuring an engine capable of over 200 bhp and a 6 speed gearbox. When the vehicle was eventually discontinued it was never replaced directly by another small coupe, with the company instead deciding to introduce the StreetKa. Throughout its life the Ford Puma gained a legion of fans and many favourable reviews, particularly for its tactile driving sensation, excellent handling and cat like stylistic "new edge" design.
