The Ford Probe was a unique project that was designed to showcase a brand new style of "futuristic" car. As a constant work in progress the Ford Probe was always being updated throughout its life, as a result we have the Mk I, II, III and IV, and then the radical V model, all of which were prototypes. Various different body shapes and technologies were tried on the Ford Probe throughout it's life but it has earned the status of a legendary vehicle that has always been at the cutting edge of automotive development since it was first released. The origins of the Ford Probe date back to the 1970's when Ford and Ghia decided that they wanted to trial some more futuristic vehicles, and many automotive enthusiasts were delighted with the results of their work. The line has gone from strength to strength since it was first released with each different version of the Probe proving to be unique and stylish in its own way. The final production version of the Ford Probe can be seen as a joint effort between Ford and Mazda, a union that also resulted in the MX-6 and 626 from the latter company along witht he Probe. It was not actually until 1988 when the Ford Probe finally saw the light of day in a consumer friendly format and as might be expected it shared much in common with the MX-6. Many saw the Ford Probe as a futuristic alternative to the brute force of the Mustang, however the two cars never really competed with the Mustang consistently outselling its sibling.
The first generation Ford Probe was in production from 1988 until 1992 in the US and took its inspiration directly from the earlier Probe concept vehicles produced by Ford and Ghia. The vehicle reminded many people of cars from science fiction classics and immediately divided opinion with some approving of the unique style and others finding it rather bizarre. The first generation Ford Probe was a coupe that was powered by a 2.2 litre Mazda F2 powerplant that was somewhat low on horsepower but provided a lot of torque for its size. A number of different trim options were available for the first generation Ford Probe with more being introduced throughout its life, as with many Ford cars various new options were also added to the range along with different engines as time went by with the more powerful Probe GT featuring an engine capable of greater horsepower and torque. As one would expect with such a futuristic design the Ford Probe featured all sorts of new technology in both the exterior and interior of the vehicle, everything from the engine to the dashboard featured hints of this science fiction heritage with the Ford Probe being one of the first mainstream vehicles to feature computer controlled suspension that could be adjusted by the driver for smoothness and comfort or tightened up for performance. The Ford Probe also proved to be a surprisingly durable vehicle, crash tests demonstrated that in head on collisions whilst the other vehicle was often written off the Ford Probe simply required some body work to fix. The Ford Prove was popular enough to justify a new model and this was released as a 1993 version and was available in two trim levels with varying packages of fittings, fixtures and equipment. This second version of the Ford Probe proved to be a worthy successor to the legacy that the original car had left behind, with a sporty engine, performance oriented instruments, and lots of modern technologies being incorporated into the design at every opportunity. The Ford Probe always pushed boundaries by including things that either were not available elsewhere or that were not available for such an affordable vehicle. A choice of different gearboxes were offered on the new Ford Probe depending on driver preference with the automatic transmissions proving very popular. Throughout it's life Ford introduced various special versions of the Probe, such as the "feature model" that included bucket seats, a GT fit, "Wild Orchid" paint and new floor mats. A new trim level was also added to the range in 1994, this "sports edition" added new body cladding, 15 inch alloys and a small amount of interior and exterior tweaks to the design. In 1997 to mark the imminent retirement of the Ford Probe the company offered a GTS trim level that was the same under the bonnet as the normal GT version but that offered a unique body kit complete with decals, new chrome wheels, spoiler and new lights and reflectors.
