Of course we are talking about Ford Prefect the car, not the slightly bizarre companion of Arthur Dent from "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy". The car is probably one of the most famous vehicles that featured a classic vintage styling and it was loved by many throughout its life. The Ford Prefect was designed to be sold in the UK and it was developed and produced there, it was also one of the first vehicles to be produced outside of the Ford factory in Detroit. The Prefect was first introduced in 1938 as the country was going to war, and it is easy to see what impact this had on the design. Anticipating a shortage of batteries Ford planned ahead and included the option to start the engine using a crank if required, and the interior was very basic and only essential instruments were included. Despite it's basic nature the vehicle was affordable and sold very well throughout it's life thanks to a wide choice of body styles and shapes. Ford introduced a brand new version of the Prefect in the post war years, this was first unveiled in 1952 and it continued to capitalise on the success of the first version of the vehicle albeit with slightly more concessions to the fact that the country was no longer at war and some more luxurious fixtures and fittings were available. This second version of the Ford Prefect was the cheapest car of its class in Britain for many years.
In 1953 a new Ford Prefect was released to the general public in a joint launch with the Anglia. This model remained in production until 1959 and Ford saw it as an opportunity to introduce many new technologies and innovations to the design in order to keep it up to date and to allow it to compete with newer designs from other companies. New independent front suspension replaced the archaic leaf springs in the Ford Prefect and new hydraulic brakes were installed that were both more reliable and much safer for emergency stops. The engine remained unmodified; it had already proved itself through the war to be a reliable and sturdy piece of engineering. In 1959 another new Ford Prefect was introduced, this version was known as the 107E and it utilised an older chassis and mated it with a brand new engine and four speed gearbox. It continued through until 1961 when it was replaced by the surprisingly more modern Ford Cortina.
