Ford PrefectThe Ford Prefect is one of the most recognisable of the vintage style vehicles from the company. It was immortalised by the charachter of the same name in Douglas Adams "Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" and this just demonstrates how much the vehicle has become ingrained into the nations psyche. Originally the Ford Prefect was simply a modification of the existing 7Y, the 7Y itself holding the accolade of being the first car produced outside of the Ford factory in Detroit. The Prefect was aimed at the UK market and designed from the outset to appeal to the British customer. As it was introduced at the start of World War II with many countries at war the Ford Prefect featured many concessions to the time such as a crank that would start the engine should batteries be unavailable. The small, compact, comfortable and affordable nature of the Ford Prefect ingratiated it with the target audience and it sold well throughout it's life in all of it's guises, from the small coupe to the large tourer version. Ford launched a brand new version of the Prefect in 1952, this post war model was more comfortable and luxurious with more concessions made towards a slightly more sophisticated design. Various fixtures and fittings were improved on the new Ford Prefect based on customer demand.

For it's size and level of comfort the Ford Prefect was the cheapest vehicle available in the UK for many years, and its continued success led Ford to give it something of a face life in 1953. This new model of Ford Prefect was launched alongside the new Anglia and it remained in production until 1959. It featured the latest automotive innovations such as true independent front suspension instead of leaf springs, and fully hydraulic brakes for better stopping power in an emergency. The engine was carried over intact from the old Ford Prefect as it had proved powerful and sturdy, able to cope with lots of abuse without failing. The interior of the new vehicle was also somewhat modified with slightly more comfortable fixtures and fittings. From 1959 until 1961 when the Ford Prefect was discontinued another new model was offered, this 107E version took the existing 100E body and mated it with a brand new engine and gearbox in order to create the definitive Ford Prefect.
