The Ford Prefect is one of the most famous of Fords older designs and it was first introduced in 1938 making it a World War II vintage vehicle. The Ford Prefect in its original incarnation represents a modification of the 7Y, the 7Y being the first Ford vehicle designed outside of Detriot. The Prefect was designed to sell solely to the UK market and as such featured a variety of fixtures and fittings designed to appeal to a country at war such as the ability to start using a crank handle should batteries not be available. There is no denying that the Ford Prefect was somewhat basic but it was also affordable and sold well. There were a number of different body shapes and styles available for the Ford Prefect, from the two and foor door saloons to the larger grand tourer models and the smaller coupes. Between 1938 and 1941 41,486 were sold and this number more than tripled in the years between 1945 and 1948. A new version of the Ford Prefect was launched in post war Britain in 1952. This new vehicle featured a number of new design changes that updated it for a more modern audience. The notoriously weak headlights were improved and moved and trafficators were fitted to the new Ford Prefect to avoid having to signal manually. In it's standard, unmodified and most basic form the Ford Prefect was the cheapest vehicle of its size and stature available on the UK market.
A brand new Ford Prefect was launched in 1953 next to the new Anglia and this new model remained until 1959. Many new technologies and engineering techniques were implemented in the design of the new Ford Prefect with the seperate chassis being replaced with a new solid one piece chassis. More modern independent suspension replaced the old leaf springs and new hydraulic brakes ensured that the vehicle was safe to drive should the driver need to stop quickly. In fact the only part of the new Ford Prefect that was not modified in any way was the old engine, this was kept in its original unmodified form as it was sturdy and reliable. The interior of the new Ford Prefect was also much more luxurious than the older version of the car, and new varying trim levels ensured there was a vehicle for everyone regardless of budget. In 1959 until 1961 the older model was surpassed by the 107E model of the Ford Prefect. This version was simply a 100E body that was modified with a new engine and four speed gearbox, and it was only eventually replaced by the much more modern Ford Cortina.
