Ford PopularThe Ford Popular was developed and produced in Britain between 1953 and 1962 and it was designed from the outset as a budget vehicle. It's unique styling and the fact that it occupies such a specific niche in British automotive history ensures that there are still many fully functioning and well looked after Ford Popular cars about on British roads. As previously mentioned the car was designed solely to be a budget vehicle, with the Anglia and Prefect being discontinued Ford had no other vehicles to appeal to a more budget conscious market so the Popular was created by taking an Anglia chassis and modifying it. It was mated with a 30 horsepower engine that, while not spectacular, proved adequate and capable of propelling the vehicle to nearly 60 mph. Despite the fact that it contained very few mod-cons and luxuries the Ford Popular sold exceptionally well due to it's unique position on the market; unless buyers wanted to spend much more money on another car they could either purchase a Ford Popular or try to find an older, rather out of date pre-war car.

In fact the Ford Popular sold so incredibly well that by 1959 the company decided to give it an overhaul and modify it in various ways. The new version of the Ford Popular was still powered by the same engine but it was tweaked to provide extra horsepower and more speed, and while the body was still from an Anglia Ford decided to include a choice of trim levels and various optional extras for buyers to pick from when ordering. This allowed the Popular to compete not only in the budget market but also the much more exclusive luxury market where more fittings and fixtures were expected. New brakes were also included in the new design making the car far safer thanks to a vastly reduced stopping distance.

The new Ford Popular continued through until 1962 however it has left a long lasting mark on the collective motoring conscious of the nation; the vehicle is such an iconic design that it has been used for many years in various television shows, films and books. For instance Doctor Who's car for a while was a Ford Popular, and it also featured in a number of Monty Python Sketches.
