Ford PopularThe Ford Popular is a vehicle produced in the United Kingdom between the years of 1953 and 1962, and due to it's unique classic design it has become a collectors item with many of them still being looked after and cared for and exhibited at motor shows and classic car meetings. The Ford Popular was originally developed as a budget alternative to the recently discontinued Anglia and Prefect and it shares an obvious design lineage with both vehicles. The 30 horsepower 1172 cc engine proved adequate and while the car was very basic (it featured no heating, no chrome fittings, and painted bumpers) it was very cheap and over 150,000 were produced in total. The Ford Popular proved to be an unexpected success with many appreciating the reduced cost and the fact that the second hand car market was in tatters after World War II, so a new car was the only option. In many was the first Ford Popular cornered the market; it was a choice of purchasing either a Ford Popular or a much older car from the pre war era, or spending much more money on an Anglia, Austin or Morris Minor.

In 1959 the original version of the Ford Popular was discontinued and replaced with a more updated version that continued through until 1962. As with the older model of Ford Popular it was based around the Anglia body shape but horsepower was boosted to 36 and new hydraulic brakes were installed resulting in a vastly decreased stopping distance at speed. In order to meet the needs of motorists who had more money to spend Ford introduced various trim levels for the new Popular, and they also introduced the concept of optional extras for the first time. Towards the end of their existence the Ford Popular was used by performance enthusiasts who used the strong, roomy and light body and tuned the engine to produce much more power, many of these vehicles were used for drag racing at the time.

The Ford Popular holds a special place in the heart of the nation as demonstrated by its many appearances in popular films and literature. A Ford Popular became the car of Doctor Who for many years, and Monty Python's Flying Circus also featured a Ford Popular for a variety of sketches. Although the vehicle was discontinued in 1962 the name was revived in the 70's as a tag for the entry level trim on the Escort Mk2, and this trend continued on various marks of Escort and Fiesta until the 1990's.
