Ford MustangIf there is one car design that apparently embodies everything that is fantastic about American engineering that has captured the hearts and minds of people across the globe it is the pony car, and no pony car is more famous than the vehicle that invented the term; the Ford Mustang. The Ford Mustang is a legendary vehicle that has been in production since 1964 (making it the second longest vehicle in constant production for the company) and it has defined a whole new type of vehicle. The Mustang name was taken from the World War II fighter aircraft of the same name, and the first generation version of the vehicle was originally a two seat mid engined roadster car. Ford soon saw the error of only including two seats so modified their prototype to include four seats and this prototype was put into production relatively unchanged. In an effort to keep costs down Ford decided to use many components from existing vehicles. Whilst the first generation Mustang may not have been cutting edge it did save Ford a fortune in development costs and it also allowed these savings to be passed on to the customer resulting in a surprisingly affordable vehicle.

Throughout the latter half of the 1960's and the beginning of the 1970's more emissions regulations were introduced for cars to adhere to, as a result the 1973 Ford Mustang was designed to be as eco-friendly as possible. The hellish energy crisis occurred just months before the new Ford Mustang was launched allowing the company to market their new car to a whole new generation of ecologically minded motorists. Sales were not incredible but were still very promising despite some negative reviews that criticised the direction the design of the new Ford Mustang had taken. A third generation Ford Mustang was released in 1979 and this was deliberately designed from the outset to hearken back to the original versions of the car. Based around the fox platform this new Ford Mustang also featured a restyled interior for extra comfort, and a new engine bay that allowed greater access to the engine and other components in order to allow people to service the vehicle themselves with ease.

It would not be until 1994 when the Ford Mustang was next updated, fifteen years had elapsed since the last update to the design and this allowed Ford to market the new Mustang to a new generation of motorists who had never had the chance to own a pony car. The fourth generation Ford Mustang was completely re-designed and re-engineered from the ground up and featured a very muscular and aggressive body that contained subtle hints of previous generations of the vehicle. This new Ford Mustang featured a 3.8 litre V6 (or 4.6 litre V8 on the GT version) and came with a much more luxurious and comfortable interior than what was previously available. More recently the fifth generation of the Ford Mustang was released; this new vehicle first saw the light of day in 2005 and is an example of retro-modernism, whilst the design is very aggressive and in keeping with a modern vehicle it is also quite clearly playing homage to the original 1960's version of the car. In 2010 a number of changes were introduced for the fifth generation Mustang that improved handling and speed thanks to improved aerodynamics.
