The Ford Mustang is an iconic design that has become something of a symbol of American automotive engineering across the globe, and while it is not directly marketed in various worldwide markets it is a popular import. The Ford Mustang is actually the second longest vehicle in continuous production from the company with a history that can be traced to 1964 when the first version was created. Obviously the Ford Mustang is also famous for being the vehicle that created the notion of the pony car, and without the Ford Mustang there would be no Barracuda's, Javelin's or Camaro's, all of which have become iconic designs in one way or another. The first generation Ford Mustang was created originally as a two seat mid engined roadster, however the company saw the flaw with adding only two seats so quickly modified their prototype to feature four full seats even though room in the rear was slightly restrictive. In an effort to keep costs down Ford decided to re-use many components from other vehicles, this also allowed the vehicle to be produced for a low price and for these savings to be passed on to the customer, something that the pony car has become famous for. Initial Mustang sales were very strong with over a million units selling in eighteen months.
The second generation of the famous Ford Mustang was created in a time of ecological crisis. In the 1970's increasingly strict pollution and emissions regulations were being introduced and OPEC had undertaken an oil embargo. More and more people were aware of the impact their habits were having on the environment so pony cars fell from grace with the public preferring more economical vehicles. The 1973 Ford Mustang was rolled out just a few short months after the infamous Energy Crisis, something of a stroke of luck for Ford's marketing team who were able to describe how much more efficient this new vehicle was. As a result sales, whilst not as strong as the first generation, were still very high. by 1979 it had become apparent that the Ford Mustang was overdue an update so the designers went back to the drawing board and decided to take the Mustang right back to its roots. The new vehicle was based around the Ford fox platform and both the exterior and interior were completely redesigned to provide a unique and comfortable spectacle that was fun to drive.
The next update for the Ford Mustang would not appear for over fifteen years when the fourth generation was released in 1994, unleashing the mighty pony car on a whole new generation of motorists. The new Ford Mustang featured a new, aggressive styling that was more muscular than the older vehicles of the 60's and 70's, but the designers were careful to include many subtle nods to the old designs. There was a choice of five speed manual or four speed automatic gearboxes and whilst the standard Mustang was powered by a 3.8 litre V6 the GT version was powered by a new Ford 4.6 litre V8. The vehicle was updated with a brand new exterior in 1999 as an interim measure until the fifth generation was launched in 2005. This new Ford Mustang was again a new vehicle based around a new platform, and once again it became more muscular and sculptured, but the design hearkened even more back to the original 1960's shape and has been described by many as a timeless classic.
