When the Ford Mondeo was first launched to the worlds press and public in 1993 it marked a turning point for Ford. Initially the Mondeo was available as a four door saloon, five door estate and also a five door hatchback and all of the vehicles were crafted in Genk at the factory that previous developed the Sierra. The Ford Mondeo was a direct replacement for the Mondeo, it also replaced the Telstar, and with these two vehicles being somewhat iconic and brand defining the Ford Mondeo had a large task to accomplish. Initially despite some teething problems the Mk1 Ford Mondeo sold well and went on to turn around the fortunes of the company.
Eventually the time came to give the Mondeo an overhaul. Ford had been constantly refining the design behind closed doors and had responded to a number of customer complaints, so in 1996 when the Ford Mondeo Mk2 was launched it went some way towards alleviating the problems of dull styling, weak headlights and poor passenger leg room. In order to recoup some costs Ford initially took a number of standard fittings and made them optional extras, however this proved unpopular and by 1998 the Mondeo was restored to its former glory complete with air conditioning as standard.
The Ford Mondeo Mk3 was first introduced in 2000 and unlike the Mk2 it represented a true new vehicle in many respects with far more changes than what had occurred previously. The styling of the new Ford Mondeo borrowed many cues from the Focus and this helped ensure a sense of a real brand with a number of different classes of vehicle. The Mk3 Mondeo continued to address a number of complaints (included the dreaded lack of rear legroom) and Ford lengthened the wheelbase and provided a new diesel engine. The suspension and steering were hardly tweaked at all and as a result the vehicle continued to be smooth and responsive to drive.
The final iteration of the Ford Mondeo was released in 2006, six years after the previous version made its debut. Again this represented a brand new vehicle, this time it was built around a Volvo platform that Ford had previously used for the Galaxy and S-Max. Reviews were very favourable for the new Ford Mondeo and as one might expect a large number of optional extras are available across the various trim ranges from the entry level Edge to the top level Titanium S version. Inside the cabin are a wide number of new technologies first shown on the C-Max making the Ford Mondeo one of the most modern vehicles available to buy.
