The first version of the Ford Mondeo was first launched in 1993 to critical acclaim, available as either a four door saloon, a five door estate and also as a five door hatchback vehicle. All of the first version of the Ford Mondeo were produced at the Belgian plant in Genk, home of the popular Sierra that the Ford Mondeo replaced. As well as the Sierra the Ford Mondeo also replaced the popular Telstar, it is no exaggeration to say that it had particularly big shoes to fill! The Mk1 Ford Mondeo was front wheel drive almost entirely with a very limited number of four wheel drive versions available. When it was finally released the Ford Mondeo represented the most expensive development for any new car ever, with the marketing and sales efforts being truly international. The Mk1 Ford Mondeo is the vehicle credited with turning around the fortunes of the company and helping them regain their reputation.
As with all things the Ford Mondeo began to look dated so eventually required a facelift. The Mk2 Mondeo was launched in 1996 and they had carefully taken the time to address a number of customer concerns including the boring styling, weak headlights and lack of legroom for passengers seated in the rear of the vehicle. Ford cut some costs by making things such as air conditioning and alloys options rather than fitting them as Standard to the Mondeo, however by 1998 Ford were able to re-apply these as standard options on the Mondeo. The interior and instrument layout were modified slightly for the Mk2 version of the car and a full size drivers airbag was fitted. In 1998 Ford also took steps to modify the Zetec engine that powered the Mondo in order to boost power at high revs. The Mk3 version of the Mondeo first saw the light of day in 2000 and was a true new car in that it was much larger than the previous two versions of the vehicle. The styling for the new Ford Mondeo was also very reminiscent of the new Focus and it afforded the brand some commonality and a sense of design across the entire company. Yet more problems were addressed with the Ford Mondeo Mk3 such as poor rear legroom (the wheelbase was lengthened) and poor performance on the diesel version of the car (a new engine was fitted). As always with the Ford Mondeo ride comfort and stability were second to none and the car was responsive and enjoyable to drive. Thanks to a stiffer body and an "Intelligent Protection System" the new Mondeo was much safer and received a higher safety rating than previous versions. Ford had produced what was now the most popular car in its class in the UK. The next version of the Ford Mondeo was first revealed in 2006 and was based on a platform originally developed by Volvo that is used for the Galaxy and S-Max. When it was released in 2007 this latest version of the popular Ford Mondeo was received incredibly well and is seen as the finest evolution of the car by many. As with all Ford vehicles many different trim levels are available ranging from Edge through to Titanium S. Statistics show that the latest version of the Ford Mondeo is very fuel efficient and that it performs well. The marketing campaign for the new car has featured a number of film appearances including Casino Royale. The new Ford Mondeo is packed with the latest design innovations and technologies that were first used on the C-Max.
