The Ford LTD is a stunningly luxurious vehicle that, although only sold originally in North America, has become something of a collectors item across the globe. Many people still scratch their heads regarding the LTD name, the most popular assumptions are that it stands for "Luxury Trim Decor" or that it relates to an obscure technical term to do with the body style. More likely than not it is simply a collection of random letters assigned to the vehicle! The first theory may have some truth however when one considers the nature of the vehicle. It was produced from 1965 to 1991 in various guises but originally was a badge rather than a dedicated vehicle; it signified the more luxurious cars on a certain range.
The first Ford LTD was actually a more luxurious modified version of the Ford Galaxie and it was sold as the "Ford Galaxie 500 LTD". It was designed to compete with cars that were being produced by other developers such as Chevrolet and Dodge, Ford wanted to nudge their way gently into the luxury car market with the LTD, little did they know at the time that they would eventually produce a vehicle that would sell incredibly well! Standard Galaxie versions were leagues apart from the Ford LTD model and the car also introduced a large number of new technologies that only much later would become standard on other vehicles, things such as electric windows and seats, power steering and brakes and air con were all ultimate luxuries and to have them all mounted to the one vehicle shows how serious Ford were in producing the ultimate in luxury with the LTD.
The most recent and up to date version of the Ford LTD was produced around the fox platform that was used for the unpopular Granada/Monarch but unusually it seemed to take a step backwards and incorporated many elements of engineering from older, out of date cars such as the Fairmont and Zephyr. This actually proved to be a unique selling point for Ford with the LTD as it allowed them to produce an incredibly reliable vehicle based and designed around tried and tested technologies. This proved to be a good strategy to adopt is in 1983 and 1984 the Ford LTD was the third best selling vehicle in the US and it was even continued for 12 months after its scheduled discontinuation date.
