The Ford LTD is something of a unique vehicle and a classic in North America that was imported in small numbers to the UK for collectors and enthusiasts. Much mystery still remains as to the origins of the Ford LTD name, some have suggested it may stand for "Luxury Trim Decor" whilst others have pointed out that it may simply be a random abbreviation of a technical term related to the body style that was utilised in the design of the LTD. Despite confusion about the cars name this luxurious Ford saloon has become something of an icon and there has been a Ford LTD in production from 1965 right through until 1991 in the United States. Originally the Ford LTD name was applied to the higher levels of trim available for the popular Galaxie, however the vehicle emerged as its own model in 1967. Two different versions of the Ford LTD were sold in 1977 with the full size standard version continuing as before but a new rebadged Torino also being sold until the three letters as the Ford LTD II. This two line arrangement occurred again in 1983 with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria and Ford LTD continuing alongside.
The first model of the Ford LTD first graced the roads and highways of North America in 1965 as the Ford Galaxie 500 LTD in order to compete with other comparable vehicles like the Chevrolet Caprice and Dodge Monaco. The vehicle featured much more luxurious styling than what was available on the standard Galaxie versions and many newer innovations that are now commonplace such as electric windows, electrically powered seats, powered brakes, power steering and air conditioning were first used on vehicles like the Ford LTD. This model was updated in 1968 and although the body was not altered in any kind of dramatic way various tweaks and alterations were included that made the 1968 iteration of the Ford LTD distinctly seperate from anything that had come before. The headlights of the Ford LTD were constantly being updated with each new version as were various other fixtures such as the grille, and from model to model the wheelbase varied quite often. Another redesign took place in 1971 with Ford striving for perfection with the new LTD, this new version included various new trim options and styling changes. The final and most recent version of the Ford LTD was built around the fox platform and was, in effect, a re-designing of the 1981/1982 Granada/Monarch vehicle incorporating elements of the earlier Fairmont and Zephyr cars. Many engineering components were taken straight from previous, existing vehicles in this new Ford LTD which actually proved to be a good thing as it bestowed upon the LTD excellent reliability thanks to the use of existing, tried and tested technologies for much of the vehicle by Ford. The choice of engines in the new Ford LTD varied from a 2.3 litre four cylinder engine right up to a 5.0 litre V8 powerhouse meaning there was something for everyone from the most economical to those craving more power. In 1983 and 1984 the Ford LTD took the accolade of being the third best selling vehicle in the US, and it was given a stay of execution in 1986 as it was supposed to be discontinued but with the new Taurus dividing opinion so much the decision was taken to extend the life of the Ford LTD by another year.
