Ford Lotus CortinaThe Ford Lotus Cortina is a historic racing vehicle and road car with a lineage that stretches right back to 1961 when the association between Ford and Lotus that would eventually result in this sporty Cortina was founded. Their first project together was a new twin-cam version of the popular Ford Kent engine that would eventually be used in a number of production racing vehicles. Ford requested that this new engine be fitted to a number of saloons for test purposes and the Lotus Cortina was born. The arrangement was simple, Ford would market and sell the vehicles and supply the body shells while Lotus would complete all mechanical and styling changes for the new Cortina. Various alterations were made to this Cortina in order to make it more suitable for racing, including lowering the suspension and stiffening it up, replacing many body panels with newer alloy panels that were lighter, changing the gearbox and engine and altering a number of exterior things in the name of aerodynamics. Inside the new Ford Lotus Cortina the vehicle was unmistakably designed for racing; it only featured essential instruments and the layout was easy to read and comfortable. When it was released for general sale many motoring enthusiasts immediately purchased one and it sold well due to it's amazing performance for the price. Whilst there were some teething problems these were quickly overcome and the Ford Lotus Cortina went from strength to strength. As problems occurred or improvements were suggested the Ford Lotus Cortina was altered ensuring that it was always as up to date as possible, the last update for the Mk1 version of the vehicle came in 1965 when the rear brakes were adjusted and gearbox ratios tweaked.

The Mk2 version of the Ford Lotus Cortina took over in 1967. This was mainly driven by a desire from Ford to change their image; many members of the public linked them with any flaws of the vehicle while praising Lotus for the good points on the Cortina. The new Ford Lotus Cortina was produced alongside standard Cortinas at the Ford plant in Dagenham, and this time the company took their time with development. The only exterior aesthetic change to the Mk2 version of the Ford Lotus Cortina came in the shape of a new front grille, new steel wheels and new lotus badges. It was also available as a left hand drive from the beginning, opening the vehicle up to a region that the Mk1 failed to capitalise on. The engine that powered the Ford Lotus Cortina Mk2 was more powerful and also more reliable and the gearbox was somewhat altered. The new vehicle was also wider which resulted in various changes to the wheels, and radial tyres were included as standard on the Ford Lotus Cortina Mk2. Inside the cabin the new Mk2 vehicle shared many similarities with the standard Cortina GT; this commonality allowed the company to produce them at a much more rapid rate. The Mk2 Ford Lotus Cortina continued until 1970 when it was replaced by the twin-cam engined Escorts.
