The Ford Ka has sold exceptionally well since it was first launched in 1996 by Ford in order to sit beneath what was their smallest car at the time, the Fiesta. The Ka was especially popular in the UK where it became the most popular city car produced for many years. In order to keep the vehicle competitive Ford have constantly refined and upgraded it, often by moving what were once optional extras and adding them as standard fittings to basic models, for instance power steering was originally an optional extra on the Ford Ka but after twelve months in production this was changed to become a standard fixture on the vehicle. As time went on various new models of the Ka were introduced by Ford, many of them featuring very different styling such as the LuxuryKa and SportKa.
The first Ford Ka rolled off the production line in 1996 and was featured in a comprehensive marketing campaign as it was now the smallest vehicle produced by Ford at a time when people were looking at making the shift to smaller, more economical vehicles. The Ka was developed around the same platform as the Mk III but shortened in places, the current Mk IV platform would have proved too large for a city class car and Ford were keen to differentiate the city car class Ka and the supermini class Fiesta. Aside from sharing the same platform the vehicles were in fact very different but this sharing of platform did allow Ford to complete the majority of production for the Ka on the current Fiesta production line, saving lots of development costs in the process. When it was released critics praised the road handling describing the Ford Ka as a very nimble little car that clings to the road well; however some felt that there was no niche for the vehicle and others were alienated by the seemingly "cute" styling.
A brand new Ford Ka was built from the ground up in association with Fiat on their Panda platform, this vehicle was launched in 2008 to replace the older Ford Ka. As one might expect the new vehicle now features Ford's opinion dividing "kinetic design" styling but despite this the vehicle still shares a hint of design with the old Ford Ka. Many new technologies such as Bluetooth and mp3 player compatibility have been incorporated into the design and other mod-cons such as steering wheel controls and voice activated controls are also now available. Electronic power assisted steering ensures that the vehicle is as nimble as the older version and early signs hint that it is selling well.
