The Ford Granada is a vehicle that has played a vital role on the world automotive stage and was one of the most popular vehicles on the road in the time it was still in production, however it is often overlooked due to it's very nature. In essence it was a true workhorse, it performed well for many years and some are still driven on the roads to this day. The Ford Granada was first released to the public in 1972 and it was designed to replace the Zephyr in the UK and the Taunus in mainland Europe and it and it was intended to be the definitive executive class vehicle for the 70's. It was bought in tremendous numbers of companies and also by many taxi firms, and for a time even the Police utilised the Ford Granada making it by far the most common vehicle on the roads for a number of years. Originally very early models of the vehicle were sold as the Consul but by 1975 any other names had been dropped and the Ford Granada line-up of vehicles was complete.
As one would expect from Ford the Granda comes available with a selection of engines from 2.0 to 3.0 litre in the UK (or 1.7 to 3.0 in Germany) and it was available in a choice of two or four door saloon vehicles, and also a five door estate and two door coupe. The Ford Granada still continued to sell and it was decided to overhaul the design somewhat in order to make it more contemporary. The older style Essex engines were replaced with a choice of 2.3 or 2.8 V6 Cologne V6's that were far more reliable and powerful than the previously available engines. There was also a sports version of the Ford Granada developed complete with spoiler, alloys, and 2.8 litre injected engine.
Another refit of the popular Ford Granada occurred in 1985, rather than develop a new version from scratch or overhaul the old vehicle Ford decided to rebadge the existing Scorpio car, change a few fixtures and fittings and market it as a new vehicle. Despite this simple rebadging the new Granada continued to sell very well even though it was only marketed in the UK and Ireland. The Scorpio name crept back into the brand; it was reserved for the more luxurious and top end Granadas. The new Ford Granada was something of an iconic design; many new technologies that later became commonplace were first utilised on it such as anti-locking brakes. For years the Granada soldiered on as the most popular vehicle on the road; something of a major success for Ford.
