The Ford Fiesta is an iconic supermini that has been in almost constant production since it was first released in 1976 and through six generations it is delighted generations of motorists with its compact stylings and economical performance. The Ford Fiesta is, by and large, the most popular car the company has ever produced; their own officially released figures show that over ten million Fiestas have been manufactured and sold since 1976 making them one of the most prolific cars on the road. The Ford Fiesta was created in the wake of the 1973 energy crisis. This forced many people to look at their own spending and environmental habits and a large shift towards smaller, more economical cars was noted amongst manufacturers. These supermini class vehicles sold well thanks to rising fuel prices and the Ford Fiesta is a perfect example of this; their specification called for a smaller more fuel efficient vehicle than their Escort that was also cheaper to produce.
Ford anticipated orders in excess of 500,000 Fiestas a year and they were not disappointed. From the moment the Fiesta rolled off the production line it was greeted with open arms by both critics and the motoring public, many of whom praised its elegant simplicity. The Ford Fiesta featured a four speed manual gearbox and a reliable, proven Kent engine coupled with technologies that were tried and tested to create something that was truly excellent value for money. By the time Ford reached 1979 they were able to announce an important milestone; they had sold their one millionth Fiesta. The MkI version of the vehicle was available in a variety of different trim levels ranging from basic to luxurious and even sporty, and the most iconic Fiesta of all, the XR2, was unveiled by Ford in 1980. This fast supermini became the staple of boy racers and performance oriented motoring enthusiasts throughout the 80's.
The Ford Fiesta continues to sell exceptionally well thanks to constant revisions and redesigns that keep it as up to date and modern as possible. The brand new sixth generation of the Ford Fiesta is no exception. It is a completely new vehicle designed around the same platform as the Mazda 2 and it is packed with some of the latest technologies and comforts available in automotive engineering. The chunky, sports like styling of the car has been designed with aerodynamics and aesthetics in mind and Ford have included a Convers+ menu system linked to a multi function display on the new Fiesta that can be controlled using buttons on the steering wheel. Ambient lighting is an option for the interior of the vehicle, and mp3 player compatible stereos are now fitted as standard.
