The Ford Fiesta is an iconic supermini class vehicle that has been sold worldwide for many years and has proved to be something of a runaway success for the Ford company across the globe, and has sold equally well in the UK, Europe and in the US at various times throughout its life. The Ford Fiesta proudly holds the accolade of being the best selling vehicle Ford have ever produced, with ten million units being sold since the Fiesta was first introduced to the world back in 1976. Originally the Ford Fiesta was designed to fulfil a very specific role; it was intended to meet increased customer demand for a new supermini class of car that was much smaller than the Escort. This was largely due to the energy crisis of 1973 that shook the foundations of society and made people start thinking about purchasing smaller and more economical vehicles rather than the gas guzzlers of old. The specification for the Ford Fiesta was drafted in 1973 and immediately entered production and when it was released it carved a whole new niche in the automotive industry for itself.
Ford anticipated orders of 500,000 Fiestas per year so they boosted their production capacity and as soon as the Fiesta was released they were proved right. Critics and motorists alike praised the simplicity of the MkI Ford Fiesta and its four speed transmission, reliable Kent engine and, best of all, excellent value for money. By the time 1979 rolled around Ford had sold over a million Fiestas (a noteworthy feat in such a small period of time) and they went on to tweak and further refine the Fiesta as much as possible. Initially the European version of the vehicle was offered with a choice of 1.1 or 1.3 litre engines and trim levels that varied greatly from the utilitarian to the luxurious and sporty. Due to popular demand Ford released a van version of the Fiesta that was purchased in large numbers by companies and small businesses, and by far the most iconic and recognised version of this popular vehicle would be the sporty, powerful XR2 that was loved by motoring enthusiasts and boy racers alike throughout the 1980's.
In the 2000's the Ford Fiesta was still continuing to sell well despite stiff competition from various other companies all producing excellent superminis. The sixth generation Ford Fiesta was released in 2007 and it received excellent reviews when it was demonstrated at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This Fiesta will be one of the first more modern superminis to be marketed in the US and production will start for the US model in 2010. Ford have updated the Fiesta completely with this new version. It is based around a platform shared with the Mazda 2 and features a whole host of modern technologies including a multi function display controlled using a menu driven system via buttons on the steering wheel and a fully mp3 player compatible sound system. Another unique innovation is the capless refuelling system previously used on the Mondeo and the ambient interior lighting, something of a first for a budget car.
