 The Ford Fiesta has become something of a legend as far as supermini class cars are concerned and it has been sold and marketed across the globe and in various markets has been a huge success. In fact the Ford Fiesta is actually considered Fords best selling vehicle as over ten million of them have been built and sold since their inception in 1976. The Ford Fiesta was created to meet increased customer demand for a new supermini class vehicle smaller than their existing Escort. The energy crisis in 1973 meant that people were looking for more economical and compact vehicles and various other manufacturers were also creating superminis. Ford designed a specification that called for a smaller car than the Escort that could be produced at less cost and it was approved in 1973. The first wave of marketing targeted women drivers in particular as it was felt at the time that this new supermini niche would most appeal to them. Ford expected mass orders to be placed to strengthened their production lines in lieu of expected orders of 500,000 Fiesta vehicles each year.
The first Ford Fiesta to roll off the production line was a relatively simple affair; the four speed manual transmission and Kent engine were sturdy and reliable and the car offered excellent value for money and production was so quick that the Ford Fiestra was actually only the second hatchback supermini to be built in the United Kingdom. The Fiesta proved to be an instant success and by 1979 one million had been sold, something of a major milestone for the company. The European version was available with either a 1.1 or 1.3 litre engine and a variety of trim levels ranging from the entry level base to the top of the range Ghia and S trims. Ford also developed a van version of the Fiesta that proved equally popular with motorists. For those that desired more performance the 1.3 litre supersport Fiesta was also developed and released in 1980, and eventually Ford unveiled the Fiesta XR2, the fast and sporty hot hatchback that would be purchased in huge numbers by boy racers throughout the 1980's.
The Ford Fiesta is still going strong with the sixth generation being released in 2007 after being demonstrated to the press and public at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is based around the same platform as the Mazda 2, hence the similarities between the two cars, and is one of the first Fiestas to be marketed in North America since the first generation was replaced by the US model of the Escort. The new Ford Fiesta is atypical of the brand and sports a stunning body and some of the latest technology available including a Convers+ menu system that allows aspects of the vehicle to be adjusted using steering wheel buttons to control a multi-function display. Ford has also adopted a starter button for the new Fiesta along with a USB connection for mp3 players. The refuelling system is completely capless and Ford have paid particular attention to style and design with the new Fiesta, including options such as ambient interior lighting. As with most Fords a large variety of engine sizes are available and the trim levels for the Ford Fiesta start at Studio and progress through Style, Style+, Zetec, Zetec S and Titanium.
